— 1.0 Prologue: Contact

To think about archaeological websites beyond technology, we might well go on an imaginary journey.

We could wriggle past our QWERTY keys or dive through our screen, then launch ourselves down the phone line, cable, or wireless network, ducking as the Web's search robots zoom by, and come up for air, somewhere, anywhere, to find ourselves, breathless and disorientated, face to face with that mythical being…

The Reader.

AIEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! we might well scream, terrified by this unknown, multiheaded Thing: What does It want? How can we communicate with It? Will It understand us?

We might turn around and dash for the safety of home and our comfortable author's chair.

But It's out there, waiting to be reckoned with.
