Additional evidence from the Maori Land Court

In Figure 5A the gardens are shown along the river bank, but there were others in the foothills and elsewhere in the territories of these hapu. Figure 5B shows the lands claimed by two witnesses, but the claims of Wiropi Hoterene Taipari in particular were far more extensive, and he appeared in the Maori Land Court in 100 or more cases, and may have been included in the lists as an owner in others too (University of Auckland 2002). Raika Whakarongotai appeared 50 or more times. In Figure 5C the hapū lands along the river bank are shown; however, Ngati Patu and Ngati Hihi were mentioned a further 6 times in the Maori Land Court and Ngati te Aute a further 33 times.
