Plan (SVG)
The excavation of the 'House 1' site is not yet complete and there are traces of buildings which could either relate to an earlier phase of our Period 2 timber buildings, or could relate to different structures altogether.
There are traces of an earlier phase of ERTB 2 beneath Rooms 3 and 4 of Phase 1 and possibly an earlier phase at its south-west end (Object 50033). In the case of the former, it is not yet clear whether this earlier phase mirrored the ground plan of Rooms 3 and 4 of ERTB2 Phase 1. Excavation is incomplete.
In the case of the latter, it is uncertain at this stage of excavation whether these traces actually belong to a phase earlier than the circular structure located here, or are contemporary with it. The possibility exists that the six limestone postpads (99994) and fragments of wall trenches belong to a structure 'enclosing' the circular building. The excavations in summer 2007 may clarify this. The implications of such a relationship are explored further in the section, Period 2: Early Roman Timber Building 3.
