3. How I made the Houses of the Surgeon

One of the central themes of this work is the necessity for multiple models in order to accomplish multiple goals. This is due to the differing levels of abstraction needed in each one and also because of the uncertainty involved in visualising features destroyed almost 2,000 years ago. To demonstrate this I have created many Houses of the Surgeon. This section details the stages involved in creating the models, with the intention of displaying their technical biases. The software and techniques used will affect the end results, ensuring some aspects of the models are more or less realistic than others. The archaeological sources and the decisions made regarding what to include and, crucially, what to exclude from each model also need to be stated. Different approaches have been taken to each of the three different types of house model. A very schematic approach was used for the upper floor and roofing models in order to aid interpretation and the communication of this to specialist viewers. A more structurally basic but decoratively detailed model was created to show the synthesis of a diverse collection of data. A much more realistic and focused approach was used to inject life into the interpretations of the AAPP.
