The period c. 700-850 is of great interest to social and economic historians, archaeologists and numismatists. It saw the revival of international trade networks, the re-emergence of large-scale coinage, and the development of urban trading sites. However, it has also become clear that these emporia were not the only sites acting as markets. An increasing quantity of archaeological and numismatic evidence, mostly derived via metal-detecting, has begun to reveal the presence of smaller, less well-documented sites, some of which have been described as 'productive sites' (Pestell and Ulmschneider 2003, 1).
