4.2.3 Historic Environment Records

Data from several counties with a strong tradition of cooperation with metal-detector users, often pre-dating the foundation of the PAS, have not been consistently recorded in the PAS. While these areas would have distorted the attempts at national and regional mapping in Sections 2 and 3 they were important for the study of site fingerprints in Section 4.

Data on single coin finds were collected for the project from the Norfolk HER in Gressenhall and the Suffolk HER in Bury St Edmunds. It was originally hoped that a number of other archives, in particular those of Lincolnshire (which has a significant representation in the PAS records) would be examined for the project. However, an initial assessment of the quantity and quality of the material from East Anglia, in particular the Norfolk HER at Gressenhall, led to the decision to focus on completing the data entry from these sources, and time constraints precluded further investigations.
