4.4.42 Osbournby, Lincolnshire

Osbournby is located 8km south of Sleaford, next to the Fen edge. Excavations have identified an area of Romano-British and Anglo-Saxon occupation (possibly a settlement) plus prehistoric finds. Indications of a building plus Roman pottery and quernstones were noted after ploughing in 1959. A trial excavation in 1973-4 revealed a timber building, described as a hall-type building, within the area of a substantial Anglo-Saxon pottery scatter. Two ditches, possibly Romano-British field boundaries, were also noted. A Roman coin hoard has been found, but there are also Iron Age and Anglo-Saxon coins. The VASLE dataset is derived from the EMC and the PAS.
