2. Case Study Context

The case study for this article, the material culture of the Scottish Reformation, was considered particularly appropriate for a study designed to promote new understandings of shifting experiences, given that it emerged at a time when experiences of life, death and being were in the process of change themselves. Historical notes, an outline of the research context, and justification of the suitability of the case study were made available to all participants. These were necessarily brief as participants could typically afford limited time for participation and ranged widely in expertise in the subject area.
