2.1 Participating in the experiment

Replicating the experience of participants, and thus becoming participant, is only possible for readers who choose to explore the materials associated with the experimental article 'Ye Devill Among Ym' before going any further. Readers who elect to continue beyond this point, and who are therefore privy to the author's theoretical framework and interpretation of the results, will no longer be able to approach the exercise without bias introduced by familiarity with others' responses to the article. For those readers who elect to 'participate', the original instruction sheet and materials are provided. These constitute what is effectively a distinct article with an experimental format, based on a body of original research into the material culture of early modern church discipline in Scotland. For those readers who do not intend to read the article given to participants in its entirety, links to relevant sections will be provided throughout this article.
