Archaeological remains under the Pantanella Mill

Work in a wing of the Pantanella Mill to create a warehouse for the Rome Opera in 1931 led to the discovery of the so-called Mithraeum of the Circus Maximus. It had been created in the 3rd century CE in the ground floor of a building of uncertain use, and was characterised by an interesting marble decoration (Colini 1931, 123-30; 1998, 51, 69; Ramieri 1996, 266-67).
