4 Site statistics

4.1 Number of artefacts per site

Analysing the artefact assemblages, with an eye to tracing various types of settlements and with that, various activities in the past, is a multivariate (statistical) problem. There are several artefact types whose distribution over several sites should be investigated. For each of the three applicable phases (3.6) a table was drawn up, like the one below, showing the number of artefacts found for each site.

In the region of Venray only 23 'clean' Michelsberg sites occur, meaning the occurrence of less than 10% of guide artefacts from other phases and a quite accurate knowledge of the location. In Table 8 below, a outline is provided of the artefact types found on the 23 clean Michelsberg sites. Only those artefact types present on one or more Michelsberg sites have been included in this table. The other artefact types have been omitted. Excluded from the table as well was a sherd that should be attributed to the Vlaardingen/Stein phase, found on site 52E-31.
