1.0 Introduction

A Late Antique coarseware pottery assemblage, dating from the 4th to the 8th centuries AD, excavated from the Early Christian Monastery of St Lot at Deir 'Ain 'Abata in Jordan (Figure 1) has been analysed petrographically to elucidate patterns of production and consumption. The pottery selected for analysis is typical of the coarsewares excavated from this and other monastic complexes in the Levant, and includes cooking wares, storage jars, amphorae and a mortarium. Archaeological excavations at the site began in 1988, directed by K.D. Politis, under the auspices of the Department of Antiquities of Jordan and supported by the British Museum (Politis 1989; 1990; 1992; 1993; 1995 and 1997).
