6.0 Conclusions

This first foray into the wares of Aleppo has largely supported the results of previous research, but has also revealed a new production centre in Aleppo itself. Further work at Aleppo and other sites in Syria will be aimed at further understanding of the system of production of ceramics in Syria, and trade to it from other parts of the world. The above discussion about the relationship between typology and petrofabric, and the realisation that we still do not have the faintest idea where some of these important groups were made (these are the only lustre-wares made in the Islamic world for which we do not know the site of production), clearly shows why Syria will be a concern for many years to come.
