A guide to the data

The data on the distribution of amphoras accessible through these maps is drawn from a larger database of Romano-British pottery distributions compiled during the production of Roman Pottery in Britain.

The distribution maps are compiled almost entirely from published sources, and while they do not claim to be complete they should give a reasonable indication of the distribution of most wares. Where the distribution is likely to be particularly incomplete (due to mis-identifications or poor recording) this is noted in the Atlas Page.

The data includes an abbreviated bibliographic reference to the source of the data. This is not intended to be a complete bibliography of Romano-British archaeology, but is enough to backtrack from the database to the original reference. The major sources include:

JRPS-0000
The lists of pottery types in the Roman Pottery Bibliography, published in the Journal of Roman Pottery Studies vols. 1-5 (1986-92) - with corrections and additions.
RIB2.6
R. G. Collingwood, R. P. Wright, S. S. Frere and R. S. O. Tomlin, The Roman Inscriptions of Britain. Volume II, Fascicule 6, Alan Sutton Publishing, Stroud, 1994.
AML-REPORTS
Ancient Monuments Laboratory reports.
FABRIC-XX
References to wares in a fabric type-series developed for the site.
