Ahi kā: retaining rights to land through regular reoccupation (literally, keeping the fires burning)
Aotearoa: modern Māori name for New Zealand (formerly only some iwi used the term for the North Island)
Ariki: The first-born of elite families
Hapū: Māori sub-tribe, the main decision-making group
Kāinga: multi-seasonal settlement
Mana: status, power, authority
Māori: indigenous inhabitants of New Zealand
Pā: Māori fortification
Post-contact: Māori occupation after contact with Europeans (after 1769)
Pre-contact: Māori occupation before contact with Europeans
Tapu: under religious restriction, sacred, forbidden
