3.3.4 Epigraphy

The epigraphic evidence for each property was recorded. Just as most of the wall paintings are no longer extant, so too the inscriptions, once scribbled over the walls and counters of the Pompeian bars, are gone. I had therefore to rely heavily on Matteo Della Corte's useful - if over-interpretative - corpus of Pompeian inscriptions, as well as the Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum (CIL), for documenting the epigraphic record of each property (Zangemeister 1871 - CIL); Della Corte 1965).
