5. The Preliminary Results

In the remainder of this article we will summarise the results from the first phase of our research on the architectural and spatial shape of the buildings in the East Field at Isthmia. These results are organised according to their relatively 'dated' sub-phases, although, as with so many archaeological sites, less is known about the latest and earliest phases given that this site experienced fairly typical site formation processes; that is, the earliest phases were largely destroyed by nearly all subsequent building activities, while the latest constructions were more exposed to seasonal weathering than the subterranean remains in between. Even so, these results demonstrate how the above methodology has generated the first sense of an architectural and spatial shape, and a relative chronology for this part of the Isthmian sanctuary. From this foundation we can now hope to realise our ultimate goal of determining what kinds of buildings existed to the east of the Temple of Poseidon at Isthmia.

Until the type and function of each portion of the sub-phases can be clearly identified, the individual structures are labelled and illustrated by different colours (i.e. the 'blue' structure or the 'green' building). We anticipate that the second and third stages of our project, using artefactual information from the legacy data, will add the dating ranges to the relative chronologies outlined below.
