4.4 From identification to interpretation: assumptions

This section explores how our research interests, the aims of the current Atlas of Islamic Merv research project, and our assumptions regarding the nature of the Islamic built environment (considering the issues of: Building forms; Houses; Mosques; Minarets; Madrasas; Suqs and bazaars; Caravanserais, khāns, funduqs and ribats; Other public building complexes; Gardens, orchards and fields; Streets and alleys; Courtyards; Two-storey structures; and chronology), impacts upon what we see, digitise and interpret within the aerial data.
