6.3.2 Using different images and contrasts

Using all the available imagery was crucial to interpreting the images. Differences 'of lighting, of cultivation and of plant growth, according to the time of day, the season, and the year' (Wilson 2000, 212) will all impact upon what can be seen and how clearly. In addition, factors such as the amount of moisture, and differential drying, will have a considerable impact on what can be seen in any specific image. Different conditions highlight different aspects of the site, in different areas of the site. So all the available images, along with different contrast stretched versions were used.

Digitisation took place on screen. The IKONOS satellite image was used as the base map for the digitisation process, but the transcription process relied on 'toggling' between the different images, examining each image's potential to help interpret the archaeological evidence. For the actual line position, however, the satellite image was used as the locator.
