Section 2 explored the nature of the dataset produced by the Portable Antiquities Scheme since 1997. The characteristics of the entire dataset were examined in 2.4, on both the national and regional scale. This was followed by an assessment of period-specific datasets from the Iron Age to Late Medieval, which form a range of controls in which the cleaned and enhanced Early Medieval data can then be analysed. These assessments have highlighted three elements, which must form the basis for any interpretation of portable antiquities:
