4.4.46 Richborough, Kent

The Saxon shore fort at Richborough lies north of Sandwich, located on the east coast of Kent. Previously Richborough was nearer to the coast, standing on the southern edge of the Wantsum Channel. This channel was a safe sea route from the continent to the Thames estuary, which divided the island of Thanet from the mainland. As with Reculver, an important early minster church was built within the fort and the 'productive site' may be associated with it. The VASLE dataset is derived from the EMC only.
