6.7 The sites from the Beaker period

Guide artefacts used within the framework of the Meuse Valley Project for the entire Beaker period (2800-2000 BC) are the pottery (protruding foot, all over ornamented and bell beakers), battle axe, tanged points with straight wings, hollow base and triangular arrowheads with a full surface retouch. The table of the 20 'clean' sites from this phase (Table 15, below) indicates that almost all sites have been dated on the basis of the easily recognizable pottery. The number of sherds is not very large and some sites consist of a single 'isolated' beaker sherd. Only four sites lack pottery; here the presence of another guide artefact, the arrowheads, has lead to placement in this phase. Remarkably, there are in general few other artefacts beside the pottery, and only one site (52E-210) has eight different artefact types.
