This article is based on two projects undertaken by the Glamorgan-Gwent Archaeological Trust with grant aid provided by Cadw. These were the Romano-British Southeast Wales Lowland Settlement Survey (1998-2001) and the Prehistoric Defended Enclosures project (207-07): fieldwork for the former was carried out by the author with assistance from other members of the Trust staff and volunteers, and for the latter by Hannah Wiggins, Claudine Gerrard and Caroline Thomas). Thanks are due to Rick Turner (Cadw) for his help and encouragement, and to the landowners and tenants who granted us access to sites on their land. Thanks are also due to Martin Bell (University of Reading) and Evan Chapman (National Museum of Wales) for providing photographs.
