Nene Valley colour-coated wares provide important dating information for 3rd century and later sites. The forms comprising the assemblage from Brough are detailed in Table 13.

This shows a typical 3rd century assemblage, dominated by beakers, with few bowls or dishes. The only identifiable bowls are of the type copying the samian Dr 36 form, such as no.19 from Period 5 (another from Period 9, and a footring), and a fragment possibly as RPNV 80 from Period 6. The main evidence lies in the beakers, Table 14.

The codes in italics indicate records of body sherds/bases only. Detailed analysis of the beakers, taking into account the presence of earlier and later fabric types, has allowed some of these generalised categories which span wide periods to be split broadly between earlier and later 3rd century. All the sherds have been analysed on the basis of conventional dating (Fig.57).
Fig.57: Nene-Valley colour-coated beakers, dating profile (sherds percentages)
This indicates a fairly even spread, with the emphasis marginally on the earlier part of the 3rd century, and appears to be consistent with the evidence of the other NVCC vessels. If the date is assessed solely on the basis of identified rim forms, cornice, curved rim, plain rim and funnel-necked, given the spread of the cornice and plain rimmed types, a similar dating profile appears. The beakers of later type, as BKNV59 [Table 14], the pentice-moulded type BKPM and the slit-folded BKSF, all came from later deposits (Period 6/1, Groups 12.6 and 12.7) or plough-soil. The few fragments of bowls (the only type identified was the copy of samian form 36) were from similar deposits, the earliest being no. 19 from Period 5/1, Group 11.2. There were no flanged bowls or plain rimmed dishes.
