6.4 Samian by S.H. Willis

All the samian was significantly abraded and weathered. In all, 31 sherds were found, the vast majority being Central Gaulish. Only four South Gaulish (La Graufesenque) and one East Gaulish vessels are represented (all from Le Grands Champ). A slightly higher overall preponderance of decorated forms are present than would be usual in the UK. The sherds are discussed in turn below. Commentaries on site assemblages can be found in the site-by-site descriptions by following the links on the site names.

All the samian fabrics were examined and identified under x20 binocular microscope.

TS01, B2000-303-18[1], A2: Le Grands Champ.
Base sherd, TSG, La Graufesenque, Drag. 37, 10.7g, 15%, date: c. AD 85-110; slightly burnt.
TS02, B2000-303-18[1], A2: Le Grands Champ.
Body sherd, TCG, Lezoux, Drag. 37, 19.9g, date: c. AD 135-175. Decoration: part of the ovolo band is represented; this is poorly impressed but appears to be an ovolo type associated with Cinnamus ii. There is a resemblance to Stanfield and Simpson's ovolo type I for the Cinnamus ii workshop (Stanfield and Simpson 1958). The ovolo is large and rather square with a double border and no central projection. The tongue here is indistinct. A bead border separates the ovolo from a large scroll design, but with this sherd we only have tendrils represented.
