Introduction | Samian from Brough | Mortaria | Amphorae | Brough local production | Fabrics | Forms | The function of the Brough pottery
This section reports on the pottery from the main excavations in 1994 and important groups from the evaluation by the Humberside Archaeological Unit in 1991. The total quantities are shown in Table 1.
Source | Sherds | Kg |
1994 Excavation | 12490 | 201.892 |
Selected from 1991 evaluation | 1644 | 11.651 |
Total | 14134 | 213.543 |
242 sherds (1.093kg) from soil samples are included in the excavation quantities. Also included are 530 post-medieval sherds (6.048kg); apart from a few intrusive sherds, these came from Periods 8 and 9. The pottery from the 1991 evaluation came from Trench I which produced the main evidence for the local production of fine wares; that from the other trenches was of the same nature as finds from the main excavations, and was not further recorded.
The finds by trench (excluding samples) are shown in Table 2.
Tr | Shs | % | kg | % | g/sh |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | 8875 | 72.5 | 163.827 | 81.6 | 18.5 |
2 | 2238 | 18.3 | 32.520 | 16.2 | 14.5 |
3 | 871 | 7.1 | 3.355 | 1.7 | 3.85 |
4 | 242 | 2.0 | 0.936 | 0.5 | 3.9 |
5 | 22 | 0.2 | 0.161 | 0.1 | 7.3 |
Total | 12248 | 200.799 |
This shows the predominance of Trench 1 with 73-82% of the total pottery from the site. The only other significant quantity is that from the adjoining Trench 2. The 1991 evaluation Trench I was adjacent to the later Trenches 3 and 4.
