The landscape today is difficult to understand on the ground (Fig. 9) and indeed even seems uninteresting to many visitors (for example listen to Paterson's answer to urban question 3). In fact, it is a hugely complex space, with evidence of the urban landscape and a diversity of built and unbuilt space. There are issues about what we are seeing in terms of its chronology, but there is little doubt of its rich potential.
