Ditches in this subsoil silt up quickly (Oswald 1970-2) and require considerable maintenance. Maintenance appears to have been erratic in Period 3.1, with several recuts being visible in each section through the ditch, and they appear to have been dug only after the ditch was almost completely full (Fig. 18). The shallow top recut (cf. 0601.1 on Fig. 18) was quite general, and may represent a concerted refurbishing of the defences at the end of Period 3.1 or the beginning of Period 3.2. It is equally possible that this recut was dug to accommodate the Period 3.2 close-set palisade.
