2.4.2 Regional distributions and quantitative analysis

In order to study regional variations in the distribution of portable antiquities the following section breaks down England and Wales into seven regions:

  1. Northern England
  2. West Central England
  3. East Central England
  4. East Anglia
  5. South-east England
  6. South-west England
  7. Wales

Each sub-section follows a common format, considering topography and settlement, the quantification of finds, the distribution of finds, and possible constraints on data recovery. A conclusion attempts to assess how far the distribution of finds reflects real differences in settlement and artefact usage within the region.
