The Neolithic chambered cairns of South Uist

3.2 The sites

There are six classic Hebridean group round cairns on South Uist, along with a single long cairn. The cairns are circular in shape, defined by large upright kerb-stones. All of the cairns appear to have a facade on their southern or eastern sides, and many of the tombs appear to have a funnel-shaped forecourt. Each cairn was originally accessed along a short passage leading to a simple chamber. The roofs of the chambers were originally sealed with a large capstone. In general, these tombs are very similar to other Neolithic chambered cairns in the Western Isles.
